You Killed It

Three phrases for praise that actually sounds like praise.

Phrase 1 of 3

Listen, then
say it out loud

You say this right after someone does something extremely well, like a performance, a presentation, or a game. It's casual, warm, and enthusiastic praise for a big success.

Examples

  • You killed it out there! The whole crowd loved your set.
  • She killed it at her job interview this morning.

You can also say

  • You nailed it!
  • You crushed it!

Good to knowIt's slang, so use it with friends and coworkers you know. For something still going well, say “You're killing it.”

Phrase 2 of 3

Listen, then
say it out loud

You use this to give strong, honest praise for something that really surprised or impressed you. “Seriously” shows you're not just being polite.

Examples

  • Learning three languages in five years is seriously impressive.
  • Her design work is seriously impressive. The whole team was blown away.

You can also say

  • That's really impressive.
  • I'm genuinely impressed.

Good to know“Seriously” here means “truly,” not “without joking.” Adding “for a beginner” can sound like you expected little, so be careful.

Phrase 3 of 3

Listen, then
say it out loud

You say this when you feel the other person doesn't believe you, often after a compliment or offer. You are insisting that you are completely sincere.

Examples

  • Take the day off. No, I mean it, you've earned it.
  • You're welcome to stay with us. No, I mean it.

You can also say

  • I'm serious.
  • I'm not just saying that.

Good to know“I mean it” can also be a warning, like “Stop that. I mean it.” Your tone and the situation show which meaning you intend.
